Advisor / Senior Advisor / Principal Advisor – Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet – Wellington

The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet serves to advance a confident, well-governed and secure New Zealand.

We are currently recruiting for experienced advisors, senior and principal advisors within our Security and Intelligence Group. This is a great opportunity for those looking for their next challenge to work on policy initiatives within a central government agency.

About the organisation

You will be based in one of two teams:

National Security Policy

This team is responsible for providing and coordinating advice to the Prime Minister, Ministers and senior officials on national security matters, coordinating legislation on national security and intelligence, and leads thinking on prioritisation for the New Zealand Intelligence Community.
National Cyber Policy Office (NCPO)

NCPO is responsible for leading the delivery of cyber security policy advice to government; overseeing the development, implementation and review of national strategies and policy on cyber security; facilitating engagement with the private sector, and leading New Zealand’s international engagement on cybersecurity policy.

The role

As a successful candidate you will be working in a small, dedicated team providing advice on a range of issues to a variety of stakeholders. Your skills and expertise in working with a range of stakeholders to craft and develop policy advice will help you succeed in these exciting roles. You will be someone who is comfortable dealing with ambiguity, resilient, and not afraid to ask the hard questions in developing your advice.

Skills and experience

Our range of roles means that we are looking for candidates who have:

Experience operating in a high profile policy environment at intermediate, senior or principal level
Sound knowledge of the policy development process, and of parliamentary processes and the development of legislation
Ability to communicate complex ideas simply, both orally and in writing
Ability to tactfully negotiate with stakeholders at all levels of an organisation
Experience drafting Ministerial correspondence, briefings, Cabinet papers
Great networking, interpersonal and relationship building skills
As a senior or principal advisor you will have led policy projects
An interest in cyber security or IT will be beneficial (NCPO roles).
