Assistant Chief Engineer – The Langham – Auckland

We are looking for a full time Assistant Chief Engineer who will be responsible for the daily operations of the engineering department.  The department is in a time of change, with the retirement of our previous Chief Engineer after more than 15 years, so new ideas, positive outlook and a fresh perspective will be welcomed.

Reporting to our Chief Engineer, you will oversee a team of 11 comprising our duty engineers, painter, electrician and refridgeration specialist.  You’ll work with our Coordinator to plan and allocate tasks as well as manage on site contractors.  From project work to you ‘stock standard’ daily tasks, you will need to thrive off the pressure that this immensely busy position brings.

Ideally we are looking for someone with a background in property management, preferably hotels at a luxury level – you will know that a sense of urgency is critical, as is communication, essential to keep everyone in the know of your progress.

You will have leadership skills you can demonstrate to us and most likely a trade qualification.  You will need to be operationally technical and savvy.  Your role will see you interact across the hotel with a wide variety of team members, relationship building and maintenance is also a key trait.

You may be ‘in charge’ at a smaller property or perhaps a number 2 ready to take a step up to a role with a lot of responsibility with the support of a senior team around you.

About the Role

In this role, you will run the daily activities and work with our Chief Engineer on longer term projects and strategy.  From pool reading and ken fix it programme and reporting to general maintenance and upkeep, you will have a hand in a wide variety of tasks.  The building is, she’s well loved and is doing well to hide her age – can you help with a maintenance plan that will continue her upkeep?

You will also help drive the culture in the department, imparting the values and goals of the company, focusing on the needs of your clients – our guests and your fellow colleagues. With ever changing demands, you will be well versed in constant re prioritising and evaluation.

You will be responsible for the departmental KPIs – you’ll need to understand a balanced scorecard that covers all aspects, not only finances and guest satisfaction.  You’ll need to be able to read, understand and know how to control a P&L.

Duties & Responsibilities

Your duties will include:

Managing payroll to meet business needs  as well as our employment agreement.
Understanding and controlling P&L reports to achieve budget.
Work closely with our Sustainability Coordinator on environmental reporting and initiatives
Implement and maintain training systems to ensure that colleagues have the necessary framework and skills to perform their job efficiently and effectively, in particular being able to offer exceptional service when interacting with guests.
Ensure that all colleagues comply with health and safety and hotel guidelines.
