About the business and the role
Innova Composite Helicopters is a new helicopter manufacturing company based in Auckland New Zealand. Our design features a unique monocoque composite fuselage that delivers unparalleled impact and corrosion resistance to the single turbine engine helicopter market. We have built and flown two prototype aircraft and are now commencing Part 27 type certification program.
We are a small and nimble team and are looking to bring on board an experienced professional to help carry the project through certification effectively. This is an opportunity to grow with the company as we complete this certification then follow immediately into certifying additional models.
Job tasks and responsibilities
We have a vacancy for a full time position as a Test Engineer. If you love breaking things and celebrate getting the right failure mode then, the next few years are going to be fun.
Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the role is focused on completing the planning, instrumentation, testing and reporting for a new Part 27 composite helicopter design to meet the certification requirements of NZ Civil Aviation Authority and FAA Part 27.
Working alongside a team of design and certification engineers you will evaluate rule requirements, understand the critical aspects of each component to be tested, develop a test plan, determine instrumentation requirements and test accordingly. You will then prepare test reports to meet certification. The role will also extend to instrumenting the flight test rotorcraft and working with the flight team to prepare for flight testing.
Skills and experience
With 5+ years’ experience as a test engineer you will be able to demonstrate a sound understanding of analysis methodologies and superior knowledge in your area of expertise.
You will have a good understanding of fibre optic and conventional strain gauge technology as well as vibration, acceleration, temperature sensing etc.
Experience designing, specifying and supervising the build and commissioning of test rigs is essential. Both static and fatigue testing will be required on many of the structural and mechanical components.
A strong understanding of HALT, HASS and Load Enhancement Factors is expected.
Engineers with rotorcraft and/or aviation experience will be given preference but strong experience in test planning, instrumentation and execution are encouraged to apply too.
If you are not already familiar with the test requirements of certifying aircraft you will need to be capable of rapidly familiarising yourself with the regulations and advisory material.
This is a fast paced and collaborative environment where you will be surrounded by professionals who share a common goal in project delivery and success. Consequently you must have a proven ability to effectively manage and prioritise a varied workload and to meet deadlines.
You should have experience in small organisations and being self-sufficient in sole charge of a project. A disciplined and systematic approach is necessary as is the willingness to act on own initiative as well as being an effective team member.
Experience working with SolidWorks and within a Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system will be an advantage.
