Principal Analyst – Ministry of Social Development – Wellington

Principal Policy Analyst, Housing

Keen to work on a key priority for this government?
Want to influence social reform?
Enjoy a dynamic, supportive team culture?

Social Housing is high priority for this government. We’re looking for a seasoned policy professional to provide intellectual leadership across our policy group. You’ll lead on important pieces of work, in an area with an exciting and evolving work programme, and contribute directly to New Zealand’s social well-being.

About the roles:

We’re a high performing policy shop and our work is broad and varied. Our work programme under the new government is still shaping up, but priorities include housing supply, ending homelessness, improving housing for disadvantaged groups, and developing the future direction for social housing. We work with MBIE, Treasury, TPK, Housing NZ and MSD’s operational teams.

Reporting directly into the General Manager, you’ll join the principal analysts and policy managers on our leadership team. You’ll take a lead role in the strategic and conceptual thinking across our policy teams, have scope to present to senior managers and Ministers, and mentor more junior staff. Senior management will support you to do your job, but give you plenty of scope to lead and deliver.

What we’re looking for:

We’re seeking strong previous experience in government policy, excellent strategic thinking ability, great communication and people skills, and political awareness. You’ll be able to work effectively with stakeholders, navigate delicate issues and provide robust advice right up to Ministerial level. You may have worked in social policy or economic policy, but whatever your background, you’ll be known for your ability to lead on complex strategic policy projects. We have a collaborative culture, so we’re looking for team players who are adaptable and have a can-do attitude.
